House Capuchin News 3-27-18

House Capuchin Shield2You might have noticed that House Capuchin is going through a bunch of changes. We’re making a major change to the way our weekly reports show up as of this past week. They’re still going to be posted each week to House Capuchin and to the Summits group, but otherwise there will be a monthly post to each of the groups where we’ve been posting weekly with links to the weekly reports. There’ve been a few complaints, so this will help to solve the “clutter” problem, while still leaving things

Clockwise from top left: spoon bags, breads, nuts and waxed covers, mini-pies, tvarog, pickled red cabbage, mushroom and onion pickle, white cabbage pickle, potted cheese, bacon/blue butter, and then up the centerm going right from there: pickled onions, pickled carrots, wine-pickled mushrooms.

accessible.

We haven’t done a post here since 12th Night, mostly because our House Feast ate pretty much all of our time and attention during late January into February and since we’re been recuperating. 🙂

Also, the House is going through a transition phase. Over the last few years the active members have dwindled since many have had to move to the Valley for work, and the members that *are* in the area, mostly have businesses or jobs that keep us all pretty busy. So we had to decide whether to keep the House going (the answer was emphatically, “Yes!”), the newsletter/report (also emphatically, “Yes!”). We’re keeping the Sunday Project Day and the 3rd Sunday Potluck, but what to do about the meetings that happen during the week? Anja does the Herbs and Sewing workshops on Saturdays and since they’re also attended by mundanes those are being kept. The other meetings have been dropped until or unless we have more active people to host them.

Corned beef, serving

We’re not sure about next year’s Winter Feast, at the moment, although we have a ‘crat and feast’crat, it looks like. Hopefully the next Virtual Project Day will pick people up so we can discuss it. VPD is scheduled for the morning of 4/15. Yes, that’s Potluck Day.

Stitched up, front

Some of us might get to All Fool’s and Adiantum’s Birthday Bash this month. We’re hoping, at least, and various projects are continuing on a personal level, from lucet cords to garb to food experiments. Take a look at the reports for details!

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 3-5pm
  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Project Day – At Ancient Light, Sundays, Noon to 6pm
  • Potluck is usually 3rd Sunday of the month. In garb (if you can) and bring a dish to share! (Next 4/15)

12th NIght – 1-10-18

House Capuchin Shield2The holidays are past, but this weekend was 12th Night! Are you excited? None of us were able to go, since it’s too far, but we’re making plans for next year in Three Mountains and the following in Adiantum! There are a few pix in this week’s report of various folks that we know from the Summits.

Ready to put by.

Next month is House Capuchin’s Winter Feast. This is our big event of the year and if you’ve been following our reports over the last number of months, you’ve seen some of the experiments that we’ve been doing to get ready and that’s really what we’re working on this month.

Everyone is invited, but the seating in the hall is limited and we’re asking that folks let us know a bit ahead of time (2/8/18) that you want to come, so we can make sure there’s enough food for everyone. Here is the invite… and you’re welcome to print it and pass it on!

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Thursdays, 5-7pm
  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Project Day – At Ancient Light, Sundays, Noon to 5pm
  • Cheese and Wine is an occasional meeting. Watch our Facebook group for notices!
  • Potluck is usually 3rd Sunday of the month. In garb (if you can) and bring a dish to share! (Next 1/21)

Feast Season in full swing – 12-14-17

House Capuchin Shield2Feasts and Investiture and Potluck, 12th Night and our Winter Feast to come!

Probably the biggest amount of time was spent this past few weeks on test foods for the feast. Loren’s experimenting with breads, including from rye and barley flours. He and Anja have done some more with pickles and brined apples are supposed to happen in the next couple of days. They have to “cook” until not long before the feast, so they’re also going to set up brandied cherries in case something doesn’t work right.

Out of the fridge on Sunday morning

Embroidery, woodworking and largesse happened, too, including the bag with the Tymberhavene device on it that was made from a spoiled version of the one that finally went onto the kneeler. A decent batch of largesse went to 11th Night. We have lots of pix in the various posts of various events and fun stuff.

…and more clipart!

The holidays always make a mess of getting things done, but we’re hopeful that we’ll be

finished with the cookery experiments in December.

If you are interested in coming to our feast, let us know. Everyone is welcome and there’s no site fee (although we’ll have a donation can out…. ) but you have to be on the list and/or have an invitation, so we know how many to plan for.

House Capuchin’s reports through 11-19-17

House Capuchin Shield2House Capuchin has been working steadily through the summer and into the fall on various projects. Our membership has dropped to very low levels, at least of the active people, due to folks moving, school, and work. We’re still going and making things and planning feasts and experimenting on various foodstuffs, even if a lot of folks are playing more in the virtual world. Some of us got to events over the summer, playing and teaching. We had a potluck each month and have gotten to some fight practices and A&S nights around the Principality.

One single blossom that worked!!!

This collection of the various posts got forgotten over the craziness of summer and tourney season. I hope we can be forgiven for that and we’ll be trying to get it out every 4-6 weeks again.

Our biggest group project at the moment is the Foods of the Slavic Lands feast that we’re holding on February 18, 2018. If you’re interested in attending, just comment here and we’ll get you a proper invitation. That’s our big push over this winter.

Tourneys in full swing 7-31-17

House Capuchin Shield2Our month’s report usually comes out a *little* earlier than this, but before we run out of July….

We’ve not been eventing, any of us, it being summer in a tourist area. We have to deal with being jealous when everyone else does! 🙂 Mostly this month has been pincushions, food

Good crumb

experiments, sanding wooden dishes, making hats, and learning nailbinding.

We had visits from some of our far-flung members this month, too!

We’re all working on projects, planning new ones and figuring out next winter’s feast. We have a date on that: 2/18/18 at the Seal Rock Garden Club building in Seal Rock (about 10 miles south of Newport.) Get hold of someone from the House (or comment below) if you’d like to be added to the event.

Pickled mushrooms with some of the turnip.

This coming month is more of the same, although largesse things and prizey things are heading for Sport of Kings (without us. 😦 ) Our potluck is on the 20th. Wines are looking like there’s going to be some work done this month and probably more cheese experiments, too.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Thursdays, 6-8pm
  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm

Tourney Season is starting June 2017

House Capuchin Shield2This month started with a bunch of friends having been given well-deserved awards including: Seamus – a Mano do Oro, Tryggr – Laurel, Durin – Pelican, and Andrew – Master of Defense, along with Piaras – Honour of the Belated Rose. Stickhorses and pincushions have been some of the largesse projects this month. We have some new

Cheese

clipart that’s showing up in various of the reports. The list of foodstuffs from the Domostroi got finished and other food lists worked on. https://housecapuchin3.wordpress.com/portfolio/foods-listed-in-the-domostroi/ Other foodly things were the cheese project and the foods for the monthly potluck. Anja had to bow out on her teaching commitments, both for this month and for AW War. We heard from a bunch of long-time, but distant, members. ….and we have some new people very, very interested in starting to come to things like fight practice, so things continue.

Stirred and cooking to 105

Several people are planning to go to War, although not to a lot of other events this summer. Our next batch of the stick-horses should get us a set of process pix so those can go online. Cheese is still on the agenda. The next potluck should be on 7/16, and as always, all are welcome.

Activities through 5-26-17

House Capuchin Shield2This has been a not-too-busy month up until the last couple of days! Hoping that everyone is having a wonderful time at Egil’s and Grand Thing! Last weekend at Crown Tryggr, among others, was put on vigil, so Anja was cooking/baking to send some things, since only one of us is able to go to Egil’s. The House banner will be there on behalf of the rest of us. A lot of largesse got prepped to leave last night, along with a Silent Auction offering, and a prize box went out last week.

Frying on the 2nd side

We’ve been experimenting some more with cheese and found a lovely Italian-style cheese that fries beautifully, a batch of which went to Egil’s with the shortbread, pickled eggs and garlic butter.

A lot of sewing/mending has been going on, people finishing projects, cleaning up some of the things in the House loaner gear.

Unmolded

There are also 5 new people who are possibly going to start playing with us. 2 want to fight, so that’s going to be on the agenda.

This week’s task is to try making some pool noodle stick horses. Anja is going to be teaching a toys workshop at War in the Trees, and wants to do some of these! We’ll be doing more cheese this month. We’re hoping to try mozzarella. We’re also hoping to get going on the gameboard/feast gear sets again.

Also Anja is teaching the 2nd half of the blackwork class at Investiture, and then at AnTir/West war a class on period balls.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Thursdays, 6-8pm and Saturday’s 3-5pm.
  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Project Day – At Ancient Light, Sundays, Noon to 6pm
  • Cheese and Wine is an occasional meeting. Watch our Facebook group for notices!
  • Next Potluck is on 6/25. In garb (if you can) and bring a dish to share!

Feast Season is winding down 4-25-17

House Capuchin Shield2House Capuchin has has a quiet month. We’re down to a very small number of active people, those who can come to at least one meeting per week, although there are non-members coming to Cheese and Herb workshops. Mundane life is eating people, particularly Amy who is in school for a number of weeks, yet, but who is trying to get to some meetings, anyway.

The cheese

Anja got to All Fool’s and taught there. We had our Potluck early this month, but managed to make a batch of cheese beforehand, which served for that and the All Fool’s potluck. Mylates of pork (a pork pie) was the main dish for the potluck and it worked out well.

Mostly the projects have concentrated on bone needles, hats, pincushions and some prizes for Egil’s that we’ve been trying to finish so that they can be delivered this weekend. We’re also trying to determine what projects we want to pursue over

Oils

the summer. Anja has been researching foods, which you can see in a couple of the links below, along with the Herb studies that are consuming the Herb Bunch and Loren is studying cheese-presses with the thought of possibly building something better-looking than rocks sitting on top of the moulds!

Our next potluck is 5/21.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Sewing Night – At Ancient Light, Thursdays, 6-8pm (also on Saturday 3-5pm)
  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Project Day – At Ancient Light, Sundays, Noon to 6pm

Only the 2nd blog post

House Capuchin Shield2Since this new blog got started House Capuchin has been pretty busy! We’ve had our own Feast and a monthly potluck, attended two Summits Coronet level events and kept going on our projects. We’re down to a small group of regulars, but are hoping to some of the interested people start showing up at the meetings that they’ve been asking for! We had people who entered competitions and set up displays, and Anja running both.

It slices!

This month our Potluck is a little early, since Anja is going to be out of town on the usual weekend, teaching at All Fool’s in Corvaria, a class that was set up a year ago. We’re also hoping to day-trip to Adiantum’s Birthday Bash.

Cheese and Wine workshop is finally getting started. We’ve done two cheeses so far, one of the type that Anja’s been doing and one of something that we learned at Summits A&S that came out with a molded cheese, instead of something more like ricotta!

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • The hats
