We’ve been doing a subtlety for several feasts in a row. A dragonship seemed like the obvious idea for this feast, like the one on the cover…. but what kind of longship? The Norse didn’t do subtleties, as far as we know, so….

…a bunch of ideas got tossed around from lebkuchen/gingerbread to marzipan to bread. We finally decided that a shaped pastie would probably make the best base, so a test run of a filling was next. We used hamburger, onion, wild rice (subbing for barley) and carrot with cheese salt for seasoning, since I couldn’t find the mushrooms. It got put into a casserole and set in the oven. The hardest part of this one is going to be getting it cooked on time, I think. I’m guessing we can bake it in the morning and then just tuck it in to warm, before doing the decorating.
Oof…. the test dish either was at too high a temp or left too long, about 1 1/2 hours… but that’s a convection oven.
