Classes – Secrets of a Medieval Castle | Chepstow Castle – Chepstow Castle, one of the first stone built castles in Wales, construction began in 1067, a year after the Norman invasion. Kevin Hicks has taken students around Chepstow for almost 30 years. Today, he takes you on a special tour of his favourite castle and shares with you some of the secrets he’s discovered over that time. – Medieval History
1588: How A Shipwrecked Spanish Armada Captain Escaped From Ireland | After The Armada | Chronicle – In September 1588, Spanish Armada captain Francisco de Cuéllar was shipwrecked off the Sligo coast. He spent seven months in war-torn Ireland, trying to escape death and marriage before eventually making his way to Madrid. – Antaine Ó Donnaile sets out on a quest to follow in the footsteps of Cuéllar through the Irish landscape, meeting local people and historians to see if his fantastic account might be true. With dramatic historical reconstruction, spectacular aerial footage, and a physically demanding journey through Connacht, Ulster and then on to Scotland, Belgium and Spain, this is a gripping and swashbuckling adventure, which gives a unique insight into Ireland and the Gaelic world before the English Conquest. – Chronicle – Medieval History Documentaries
Were The Vikings Misunderstood? | Dark Ages: An Age Of Light | Chronicle – The Dark Ages have been misunderstood. History has identified the period following the fall of the Roman Empire with a descent into barbarism – a terrible time when civilisation stopped. – In the final episode, Waldemar looks towards the north of Europe. The Carolingians saw themselves as successors to Rome, reflected in their art. Elsewhere, the Vikings were constructing long ships with intricate decoration and marking their territory with powerful rune stones. And on the British Isles, the Irish and Anglo-Saxons were creating unique works of manuscript illumination and remarkable jewellery. – Chronicle – Medieval History Documentaries

Early Week – Not much. Plant watering, mostly. Scissor projects at home.

Cookery – Again, not much. A chicken soup/pottage with greens, leeks, barley and mushrooms…. We’re waiting for the fennel to bloom!

Herb Bunch –
No Farmer’s Market and Anja was the only one for Herbs this week. No pix, either. Strawberries and raspberries were harvested each day, about an 1/2 handful. Monday’s harvest at the shop was sweetgrass and rose petals, then sweetgrass was harvested from the bucket in the garden on Wednesday and prep went on on those all week. There wasn’t enough (or long enough) sweetgrass to braid, so it was all chopped for drying. The rose petals and a few buds got prepped and then set by to dry.
Fascinating article about “Heritage” apples in England – https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20220705-the-uks-heritage-apple-renaissance
…and another about the origins of the apple. Nikolai Vavilov first identified the Malus sieversii as the progenitor of the domestic apple, Malus domestica, in 1929. It growns wild in Alma-Ata, near the Tian Shan mountains, and probably spread through the Silk Road. – https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20181120-the-birthplace-of-the-modern-apple

Project Day – We mostly woodbuttering some chopsticks and a spoon. Chatted with folks online and Peggy dropped off a couple of scroll pix.
..and also posted some pix of drying apples, prepping for the Norse apple-nut bread recipe.
