House Capuchin reports through 1-22 to 3-15-19

House Capuchin Shield2We gone most of two months since the last of these posts. We had our Winter Feast, which was a lot of good food, good music, friends and fun! Page can be found here, and the Cookbook is up on this page.

Anja and Loren have their first grandbaby. Sioned Helen was born on 3/2/19. There’s a page about Anja’s trip with a lot of baby pictures, here.

Side

The scattered members of the House have all been busy, some with work and some with projects. Very few of the group projects are getting worked on, but some more of the wooden animals are in the pipeline and Herbs are getting processed. A bunch of largesse things got scattered around over the last while, mostly as gifts, rather than going directly to the largesse pile at Principality.

…and still more

We have a potluck in a couple of days, so the next report will have two potlucks in it.

This coming month there’s a possibility that Loren and Anja might go to All Fool’s in Corvaria which would mess up Project Day, Herbs and Sewing on the 7th and 8th of April. Other than that, meetings will continue as normal.

…and do you know we *still* haven’t finished all of the cookies from the feast?!?!!

Progress on Sunday

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 3-5pm
  • Project Day – At Ancient Light, Sundays, Noon to 6pm
  • Cheese and Wine is an occasional meeting. Watch our Facebook group for notices!
  • Potluck is usually 3rd Sunday of the month. In garb (if you can) and bring a dish to share! Next on 3/17, 4/21, 5/19, 6/16
  • Winter Feast Date is 2/16/20 (assuming that there is one….)

House Capuchin News from 12-24 to1-21-19

House Capuchin Shield2This month was all  holidays and events! Tymberhavene’s Yule, 12th Night and then Adiantum’s Mid-Winter Feast were attended by 1 or more members. There wasn’t as much of the usual project stuff happening because of cooking, packing and unpacking.

If you want to come to our Winter Feast on 2/17, please contact us through this newsletter or on Facebook. We have to have RSVP’s by 2/10, since the last shopping will happen on 2/11! This is a free, non-official event. There will be a donation can sitting out to help defray costs. It’s working out to about $13 per person this year, counting hall and food.

Some projects are ongoing. Anja’s embroidery went into a band for a Laurel vigilant and some sewing into figuring out a tissue cover pattern that will be embroidered. Loren was working on bone carving, mostly. Amy did some more lucet cords for largesse. Jay has been working on recipes …and there was lots of 12th Night sewing and cooking, especially since Anja contributed quite a bit to Seamus’ vigil.

This has been gifted to the recipient, unfinished, at her request.

The Herb Bunch was busy, despite the craziness of the holidays. We have several trays of plant starts that are going to the Seed Swap that Eleanor is organizing at Summits A&S, plus there’s a batch of wood butter for largesse and a lot of herb prep, catching up on last fall’s (now dried) harvest.

Tools, blanks, 3 needles

Stella’s been busy with her music, Sasha has been working long hours, Brandon has a new job, Gudrun a new home and job and Amor has been deployed, so we’re not expecting to hear much from them for awhile. None of them, but Sasha & Stella will make it for the feast.

Lots of recipes showed up this month for various reasons, from Mushroom Catsup to some of the feast soups! Anja’s tvarog was entered in a competition at Mid-Winter Feast and was well-received and mostly consumed. …and we finished up with a potluck, of course.

This coming month we’re going to be focusing on our Winter Feast. There’s a lot of cookery and organizing to do, so there will be lots of that in our reports!

  • Potluck is usually 3rd Sunday of the month. In garb (if you can) and bring a dish to share!  (no Feb potluck), 3/17, 4/21, 5/19, 6/16

House Capuchin News from 11/23-12/23

House Capuchin Shield2If you want an invitation to our Winter Feast, which is going to feature recipes from 14th and 15th century France, please comment below or on our Facebook page.

Our month started with a bunch of cookery: mushroom tarts, Tallivent pork, cameline sauce, and decanting some of the sugar-preserved strawberries from last summer. We went on with mustard, pickled eggs, poulaille farcie with quenelles, cabbage with

One slice. You can see how thick the syrup is.

caraway and onion and then repeated the pork roast at the end of the month, along with some potatoes grown by us.

The various projects going on were mostly Loren and Anja’s; everything from carving bone into needles of various sorts to sundials, and from blackwork to pincushion gnomes.

…and there was an earthquake in Alaska, where a couple of our members are. They’re fine.

The potluck presentation.

Anja got to the Tri-Baronial Yule to spend some time with her Laurel and to watch a friend, Marya, be elevated to that rank.

This coming month, some of us are getting to 12th Night and our monthly potluck is the following week. The holidays are making a mess of getting projects accomplished, but we’re going to keep at it!

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Njalbinden needle, finished

House Capuchin News from 10-23 – 11-22-18

House Capuchin Shield2Things have been calming down on the mundane front, so there’ve been more members checking in and starting projects. We also got to see a Friend of the House that lives back east who came by on a visit. Most of this month’s progress has been on trial run dishes for the Winter Feast, though, although we tried to get our largesse contribution out last week. I guess it’ll get handed off this coming month.

The fig rennet cheese spiced with cheese salt (caraway, mustard, wasabi powder in salt)

Another of the fig rennet cheeses happened early in the month, and we had some of it at the potluck. Next up is thistle rennet! Other dishes got researched like Parry of Pesoun and Cameline Sauce, and the sauces from Le Viandier are turning out to be pretty good. We also needed to find out what some ingredients listed for those were, including white verjus and red sugar.

Anja, Loren and Jay had to miss Adiantum’s Whistling Pig Tavern because of transportation problems, but we finished the month with another good potluck.

We have a couple of events coming up that

members are planning on. Not the least is Marya’s elevation to the Laurel at Tri-Baronial Yule! Anja is planning on going with William and Aesa.

Mixed. What colors!

House Capuchin News 9-22 through 10-22-18

House Capuchin Shield2This month has been all about resolving chaos while still doing things! It’s harvest month, too. From fig sap rennet cheeses, to oak gall ink, mushroom wicks, embroidery,  rose petal sachets, and trial runs on Winter Feast recipes we’ve been hard at it all month. We finished up with a fun, well-attended potluck this past Sunday and are deep in plans for getting to a few events over the winter.

Cutting the cap

This coming month is more of the same, except Anja is working on some pieces of garb for friends who are being made Laurels over the next couple of months, and others are working on gifts for the same people.

It looks like we’re going to have a steady group of mundanes in the Herb Bunch again this winter, so plans are being made for wood butter, bruise

salve and other such things.

…and planning for Winter Feast….

House Capuchin Report from 8-24 to 9-21-18

House Capuchin Shield2Moving was the big deal this month, as both Gudrun, and Anja and Loren were deep in the throes of it by the end of the month. Hopefully, next month will be easier…. once the mess is cleaned up….

We started after the last potluck, eating leftovers and cleaning up and got several projects that were finished mailed out to their recipients.

Crown and Coronet were both amazing. Hail to the Heirs! …and between the two, Summits is going to have three new Laurels: Marya at Tri-Baronial Yule (yeah, we share her with the Tri-Barony area), Seamus at 12th Night, and Vesta will be next after that! The other big news is that Mountain’s Edge has now become a part of the Summits!

Amor’s been working on making some bracers, Sabrina’s been weaving, Stella mostly working at the Farmer’s Markets and Sash and Amy just plain working. Loren and Anja are both doing some woodworking. He’s started another Hedeby bag frame and is sanding

The fig rennet cheese

on some bowls and a stool. Anja got a fair ways into finishing a butter spreader, along with her usual

Succulent pieces that are callusing. You can see roots starting on a few.

embroidery.

Herbs and cookery mostly went into harvesting and preparing, but a good cabbage pickle got made and our big deal was the fig sap rennet cheese that went to Shrewsbury! Anja got to Shrewsbury and to Coronet, taking some yummy food with her both times and Loren and Anja have been feeding the folks who have been helping them off of some of our usual foods, like the stews and pottages and pickles that have been made over the last few months.

Isabeau and Anja have done some preliminary versions of dishes for the feast and the Hall has been reserved and paid for.

We’re planning on meetings being at the normal time over the next month, no events or anything unusual. We might be able to have a cheese or a wine night once we’re in October. We’re hoping, anyway.

House Capuchin News 7-16 through 8-23-18

House Capuchin Shield2It’s been quieter for the House this month. Most people out here on the coast are up to their ears in work, with the tourist season in full swing, and mostly everyone is too tired to do much. There are still ongoing projects and we did have a good potluck, but next month should see things picking up a little, especially since some displays are going to Shrewsbury and largesse to the Principality.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

A hedeby bag got completed and sent off in a gift exchange along with some other goodies. We’ve done a *lot* of cooking, since we all have to eat. Anja’s garden has gotten shifted to a holding spot as they move and lots of starts and re-potting has been going on. Anja’s been working on some other embroideries, particularly a small collar band and cuffs to match Seamus’ shirt. 🙂 Amor, up in Alaska, has been doing a lot of knapping of obsidian and making tools for it. Sabrina is looking at carrying more local and handmade

wool in her shop and using it in her weaving. Isabeau and Anja have been starting the process of planning and trying dishes for the feast, plus an idea for site tokens got floated and then started.

…and a lot of SCA politics blew up, so a few pieces that seemed worthwhile have been in the newsletters.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 3-5pm

House Capuchin Activities from 5-21 through 7-15-18

House Capuchin Shield2Somehow we skipped one of these monthly posts, so I’ll fill in from back that far! …and there’s a lot here.

Our Winter Feast is set for February 17 and the hall reserved for the event, which will include a handfasting during the afternoon! Anja is autocrat, Isabeau is feast-crat, the theme is 1400’s France and there will be lots more information to come!

We were very sad during these last weeks because of the deaths of Jeanne (Friend of the House),  and His Royal Highness Titus Scipio Germanicus of Aethelmearc, among others, and three House members moved very far away.

We were very happy during these last weeks because we got to spend time with Clarisse (Friend of the House), got to see the pictures and hear of the knighting of Helga in West Kingdom, and got to talk to members of the Starfollower Consort about coming out here for our Winter Feast. Amor and Gogor checked in and told us about projects and we’ve talked to three new people!

A camera in a spear head!

There were a number of events, none of which house members attended, but there are pictures from Egil’s, Investiture, and An Tir/ West War and we had a *great* display for the Waldport Beachcomber Days! We’ve actually been asked to do it again, next year, and to be in the parade.

There were three potlucks (two House and one Tymberhavene) that folks attended and of cookery were: tvarog, soup from greens, chive fritters, candied violets, cheese dumplings, lentils, rose sugar, layered strawberry preserve, beef potroast, pork roast, borscht, kolace, rye and wheat breads, Seamus’ wonderful soup, and carrot, egg, turnip, parsnip, asparagus, bean and strawberry pickles! Gogor and Anja were working through some cookbooks and finding strawberry recipes, meat pies, a chicken subtlety, another rabbit pie recipe and more cookbook links!

The Herb Bunch and our cooks were drying herbs for cooking, harvesting greens, cow parsnip for dye, hops for beer or sleep pillows and ferns, and starting roses, geraniums and succulents. A Hedeby bag frame was created and some spoons finished, plus Amor showed off his obsidian knapping and the tools for it.  Anja’s pouch project got finished, the blackworked shirts were worn and a page created about them, a ball got stitched along with some baby things and a lovely (mudane) dress that Isabeau did.

…and there are lots and lots of links and music and funnies in the various reports!

August’s potluck is scheduled for 8/19 and mostly meetings are going on as scheduled.

This month (these are standard meeting times)

  • Herb Bunch – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 11am-1pm
  • Sewing Time – At Ancient Light, Saturdays, 3-5pm
